CHRISTMAS UPDATE (Alps)
As per usual Christmas found us in the Alps, our 12th year in St.Jean and it was the greenest (Lady overheard in shop in Morzine said she'd been coming for 17 years and likewise this was the greenest she'd seen). 12 years ago although it was green on our doorstep skiing was still possible at the top of the Grande Terche ski lift. There has been one other poor year in the interim when snow was helicoptered in - the year before the snow canons were installed I think. Snow canons were of no avail prior to Christmas as it was just too warm - into double figures.
The result of all this? some of our most enjoyable days during any winter holiday we've had - the walking was spectacular, the mountains tranquil, sitting in a mountain restaurant an absolute pleasure, quiet, slow paced, just a few other kindred spirits soaking up the rays - it was truly heavenly.
Although I did have great sympathy for the families down in the resorts with little kids out for their first ski holiday, promised snow men, snow balls and skiing - patience it did come.
Walking above St.Jean, looking across the valley to Grande Terche and the ribbon of snow that is the return run to the station petering out half way down.

Our most used phrase when in France is 'This is the life', how true today. Granted it was hard times for the business proprietors.
